In this above verse, David writes about hiding God’s Word in his heart, and by doing so, he avoids sinning against God.  How do we hide God’s Word in our hearts?  How does His Word keep us from sinning?

First, the Word of God is actually the Holy Spirit.  Ephesians 6:17 says, “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”  In this verse, it shows us two things.  It shows us that the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are one and the same.  So David is saying in Psalms that he has the Holy Spirit (the Word of God) hidden in his heart.  This verse also says that the Word of God (the Holy Spirit) is a sword.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  Here we’re shown that the Word is sharper that any human-made sword.  And David is saying that he has the Word, this sword-that-is-sharper-than-any-sword hidden in his heart!

In the book The Torch and the Sword by Rick Joyner, he has a vision of God.  In this vision, God tells him that belief is the beginning of understanding.  What this means is that we must first believe what God says in our hearts, and then that belief will transfer to our minds as understanding.  Romans 10:10 says, “For it is with your heart that you believe…”  Many people try to figure out God logically, but most of the time, the Word doesn’t make sense until they actually believe it with their hearts.  Only after our hearts accept the truth does it actually reach our heads.  To hide God’s Word in your hearts means to believe that his Word is truth and to continually seek after that truth (John 17:17, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”).

How does God’s Word keep us from sinning?  Going back to Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  And Jeremiah 23:29, “‘Is not my word like fire,’ declares the Lord…”  God’s Word is all-powerful, and with this sword hidden in our hearts, sin cannot enter if we do not allow it.  His Word is a fire, which burns away the junk in our lives.  His Word, a fire, can be hidden in our hearts!

Hiding God’s Word in our hearts is simply believing what is spoken in the Bible, and what the Holy Spirit says.  This isn’t just a one-time thing, but a day-to-day commitment to keep His Word hidden in our hearts.  And with His Word, the double-edged sword, sin cannot stand.  David’s confession in Psalm 119 is one that says, “God, I’m choosing to believe with my heart what your Holy Spirit says, I’m choosing to hide your Word in my heart.”

Scriptures to Pray:  1 Corinthians 1:27

Today’s Prayer:

Father God, I’m choosing to believe with my heart what your Holy Spirit says, I’m choosing to hide your Word in my heart. Help me to believe even when things don't make sense. In Jesus' Name. Amen
